Hot-rod Baby Quilt

November 16, 2007

The time is here- the time of completion. It’s been a few long months of lazing about and several days of work in the making. After today, you will never have to listen to me complain about it again.

I was surprised at how quickly it came together. A testament to not only how long it’s been since I last used my sewing machine but also to how rarely I finish things. Yay! I had just enough black squares to tone it down and to make a diamond, so the pattern layout went quickly. The piecing was fast. I decided to use fleece in the middle instead of batting- it gave it just the right thickness and durability. It was also grey so it made the chance of my blocks looking wonky smaller. Cutting the fleece and back panel was done differently because my cutting mat is only five inches wide. Instead, I basted on the fleece and pinned down the backing and then cut it to the same size as the quilt top.

I ditched the idea of only sewing in the corners. Since I never have an idea of where I’m going from minute to minute, you can see the lengths of the stitch change everywhere. Plus, I broke two needles while sewing it. After copious amounts of little mistakes, it was finished. No matter how much I tried to screw it up, it still looks great. I’m so happy with it. I feel proud to give this as a gift.

I added a Beanie Baby spider and bat along with a little homemade note. I think it makes quite a nice bundle.

If glow-in-the-dark skeletons doesn’t scream “New Baby”, then I don’t know what does.

I don’t know what does.
